Mark-Paul was the fourth child born to Paula and Hans Gosselaar, who emigrated to the United States in 1966. Mark-Paul's two older sisters and older brother were all born in The Netherlands, and he speaks fluent Dutch. He began modeling at about the age of 4 and soon became interested in acting as well. He appeared in several TV commercials and also guest-starred on several TV shows such as Highway to Heaven, The Twilight Zone , and The Wonder Years, before landing the starring role of Chris Mills in the PBS Wonderworks movie, Necessary Parties, which also starred Alan Arkin. Soon after that he was cast in the role of Zack Morris on the Disney TV Show, Good Morning Miss Bliss, which starred Hayley Mills. After being cast in that role, Mark-Paul has said that he stopped attending his regular school and was tutored on the set or at home from that point forward.
